Blankets of Hope expands mission to provide mattresses

Local nonprofit, Blankets of Hope, known for sourcing and distributing fleece blankets to those in need throughout the region, announced they are expanding their mission this week. In addition to providing blankets, the local nonprofit will now also distribute mattress and box spring bed sets.

Founded by Marc Goldstein in 2012, Blankets of Hope has donated over 46,000 blankets. Fleece blankets are provided to homeless shelters, cancer patients & hospitals, veterans, children’s homes and other organizations that might have a need.

Goldstein prides himself on the no overhead cost mission of Blankets of Hope. To do this, blankets are shipped direct from the manufacturer to the location and individuals being served. For every $5 raised, a blanket is donated to someone in need. Goldstein does not take a pay check himself to manage the nonprofit.

In 2016, the Chef Tim’s Take the Chill Off event grew the charities mission further. The first year of the Chili event provided enough funds to donate 1,100 blankets. Now the annual event raises thousands of dollars through donations and sponsors.

Using extra money left over from 2019’s Chili event, Goldstein decided it was time to expand into a new area. A year in the making, Goldstein tells Reading Magazine that the concept started by a request from one of this board members.

The idea of providing beds was brought up to Goldstein last year by one of his board members. The concept has been on his mind ever since. “It took me about a year to find a good mattress company that would give us the price we needed” says Goldstein. “I reached out to Chris Fecera of Feceras Furniture, which I’ve know for a long time, who was more than happy to help.”

Goldstein selected Habitat for Humanity of Berks County to be the first recipient of the new mattress and box spring sets. Delivered by Fecera’s Furniture & Mattress to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Muhlenberg Township, the beds will be given to Habitat’s homeowners as needed.

Looking to the future, Goldstein has setup a partnership with Fecera’s to continue providing beds to the community. “We’re looking to raise another 3,000 to 5,000 dollars to purchase the beds and Fecera’s is willing to warehouse them” says Goldstein. With warehouse space, Goldstein can source beds one-at-a-time, or have them delivered.

Chris Fecera, President of Feceras Furniture & Mattress says he and his employees are excited for the new partnership. “It was easy to want to get involved with that passion and energy” says Fecera. “We’ve been in business for over 70 years and after working with one of our suppliers we were able to provide Marc great bedding in large or small quantities as fast as he needs them.”

Retired K-9 Officers in Reading seek financial assistance for medical bills

Medical bills for retired members of the City of Reading’s K-9 Unit are piling up and a support group is asking for assistance from the public to help pay them.

“These retired K-9s have served our community but, unlike retired human officers, the K-9s do not receive pensions,” said Keith Claytor, president of the Friends of the Reading Police K-9 Unit. “They deserve our support now.”

Since the Friends organization was founded in 2008 to help restart the K-9 unit in the City of Reading, the Reading Police Department has retired seven K-9 officers. The K-9 handlers who then care for their partners during retirement are faced with mounting medical bills.

Recently, several handlers have incurred major medical costs for their retired K-9 partners.
For example, retired K-9 Officers Rocky and Reno both suffered from bloat that required surgery and they had to be rushed to emergency care in the past year. Retired K-9 Officer Caine became ill and received medical attention, but he passed away.

“The costs for some of this care has been staggering,” Claytor said.

The Friends of the Reading Police K-9 Unit is unable to assist with those costs under its current structure. The Friends’ fund at Berks County Community Foundation is designated for the acquisition, training, and maintenance of the active members of Reading’s K-9 Unit. As such, those funds cannot be used to assist the retired, former members of the unit.

The Friends is respectfully asking its supporters to make a donation to the retired K-9 officers via this link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/rpd-retired-k9s

Lonnie Walker IV gives back by hosting Basketball Camp in Reading

Lonnie Walker IV may be known to the world as a San Antonio Spurs Shooting Guard, but to Reading, he’s family. Staying true to his roots, Walker hopes to use his stardom to inspire the next generation, on and off the court.

To give back to the community who has always supported him, Walker hosted his inaugural ‘Lonnie Walker IV Basketball Camp’ on Wednesday at Reading High’s Geigle Complex. With young fans eager to meet the NBA star, Walker took a few moments to talk with Reading Magazine about being back in his home town.

“This camp was just to give back to the City of Reading” Walker says. “For having all these basketball courts and parks that I used every single day.”

Speaking about his rise to fame Walker wants people to know he’s still a down to earth guy. “I’m still the humbled little kid who came to Reading High.” Walker says. “I know who I am now, but that doesn’t gotta change who I am.”

Spending the week in his hometown, Walker has visited the Children’s Home of Reading, YMCA, and will be holding an autograph session at Friday’s Fightin’ Phils Game. If you attend the baseball game, the first 2,000 kids get a free Lonnie Walker IV bobble head.

Before getting back to the basketball camp, Walker had one last message for the City of Reading. “I love each and every one of you, everyone means so much to me. Without you guys, I wouldn’t be the person I am today, spreading positivity and inspiration to everyone else, so I just want to say thank you to the City of Reading, Pennsylvania.”

Families in Reading Receive Free School Supplies at Community Event

To help local families with the upcoming back to school season, the DoubleTree by Hilton Reading hosted its annual ‘Back to School and Community Event’ at the 6th and Amity Playground Wednesday afternoon. Even with the high summer heat, hundreds of families and kids packed the park for free food, community resources, and school supplies.

Spearheading the event was DoubleTree by Hitlon Reading’s own Human Resources Director, Alneasa Jordan. She tells us the event wouldn’t be possible without the community. “We are hear to celebrate Reading” Jordan said during the opening announcements.

To prepare for the event, Jordan gathered over 25 community vendors to provide free school supplies, community resources, and activities for kids.

Partnering up with Penske, Jordan was able to provide 650 backpacks to local families, all free. Kids would then take their backpacks to vendors across the park to fill up on school supplies.

“Penske has been part of the local Reading community for 50 years. Giving back to the community is part of who we are as a company,” said Randy Ryerson, director of communications at Penske Truck Leasing.

“We’re excited to have so many Penske leaders from across North America, who were here in Reading attending a company training session held at the DoubleTree. They supported and led this event. Together, they donated backpacks filled with much-needed school supplies for local kids heading into the new school year.”

In addition to school supplies, the community event also featured free haircuts by American Barber Academy, demo by Star City Boxing, and community information vendors Abilities in Motion, Reading Area Community College, Ready Set Read, and more.
