The Salt Lounge Celebrates Anniversary with Blood Drive

To celebrate their one year anniversary The Salt Lounge in Wyomissing held a special customer appreciation day, including delicious samples from Good Life Organics, appearance by Y102 morning show host Andi Kurzweg, free chair massages, and salt sessions for those who donated to Miller-Keystone Blood Center.

“The year has been great” said owner Rachel Eskin. “When we started we just offered salt therapy, now we have expanded our services to reflexology, Reiki, chair massages in the salt room.” Thanks to customer feedback, Eskin has been able to offer more services throughout the year. “We now offer medical massage, Thai herbal massage, and Himalayan salt stone massage” said Eskin.

The anniversary celebration wasn’t just a day to relax in a room full of Himalayan salt, but also to help the community. “I’ve been involved in the community with things like Junior League. I wanted to do something today as an event to tie in because I knew we’d have the extra traffic” said Eskin.

While planning for her big day, Eskin chose to host a blood drive with Miller-Keystone Blood Center and local radio station Y102. Eskin provided free salt sessions and chair massages for all of the donors to the blood drive. Overall, Eskin helped Miller-Keystone gain 28 new pints of blood.

Reflecting on the past year Eskin is hopeful for the future of her small business. “I’m really excited because we’ve been able to reach a lot of people, and hopefully even more for next year, and expand our services, continue to grow, and be a part of the Berks County business community.”

Tim Dorang, collection specialist for Miller-Keystone was on site the entire day facilitating the blood drive. To help ease the minds of those giving blood, Dorang had some advise for first time donors. “It’s a matter of relaxing the whole time, and the reward at the end is cookies, snacks, and soda.”

Dorang says special events, like The Salt Lounge celebration, are important to Miller-Keystone because it provides another opportunity for public to donate blood. “We do have our center’s, but every 5 seconds someone needs blood. Basically, it’s just another way to give another person a second chance at life”.

Kiss A Cow fundraiser benefits Animal Rescue League

Teachers from all four Middle Schools in Reading participated in the very special Kiss A Cow fundraiser this week, all to benefit the Animal Rescue League of Berks County. Students were given one month to raise money in a competition which would result in their teacher kissing a cow.

The idea was first brought to the school district by Joell Koller, teacher at Southern Middle School, who also has a small heard of cattle in Blandon. We caught up with Koller and Vinnie the Cow at Northeast Middle School, their last stop of the day. “I love bringing my world into where these kids would never have the opportunity to see a cow” said Koller.

It was a fun, but tough day for Vinnie. Only one week old, the calf spent the day traveling to each of the middle schools to be kissed. The students enjoyed watching the teachers kiss the calf, the room would fill with laughter after each kiss.

According to Alex Brown, Principle of Northeast Middle School, the Kiss A Cow contest is the first phase of a larger fundraiser for the Animal Rescue League. Brown says future events will include food and pet supplies drive, all of which to lead up to an adoption pageant in May.

“It really just started as an idea for our kids to work together on a common project that is a topic, and subject, that everyone can relate too” said Brown.

Northeast Middle School raised over $600 for the Animal Rescue League, all together the schools raised over a thousand dollars.

Fleetwood Area Sophomore Connects Classroom to Real World

Gavin Milligan may seem like a typical teenager. Sophomore at Fleetwood Area High School, he loves his phone, the NFL, and even helps coach youth football during the summer. However, instead of watching Netflix or playing video games in his free time, Milligan is focused on learning everything he can about business management, entrepreneurship, and digital media advertising.

Milligan’s inspiration comes from his father, President of Advanced Comfort Specialists. Being young and ambitious must run in the family, because his father also began his career as a teenager gaining experience as a helper for a local plumbing and heating contractor. With Advanced Comfort Specialists being founded in 2004, Milligan has lived in the heating and cooling realm all his life. All of the knowledge he has picked up over the years, Milligan knows a lot about the HVAC industry, but he also wants to forge a path of his own.

Interested in helping his father promote the business, Milligan has taken what he has learned at Berks Career and Technology Center and applied it to the business. “My most recent class in business management has helped me become more organized. The things that I’ve learn there are things I never thought I’d use, until I started to connect everything to my fathers business” said Milligan.

While not at school, Milligan is always learning, watching tutorials on YouTube, TED Talks and using educational platforms like Khan Academy. Building his knowledge of digital advertising has allowed him to take over as his fathers go to marketing manager for the business.

“We’ve always been focused on word of mouth. Seeing the need to change, my father asked me to step in to help with advertising. I learn a lot in my role, most of all is that not many of our competitors are using digital marketing like they should” said Milligan.

Balancing school and work, Milligan does what he can to answers customer questions on the company’s social media pages. He also posts motivational quotes, project photos, and HVAC related content. “If someone has a question, I respond to it as fast as I can. If they need service, I put them in touch with someone as quickly as I can.”

Milligan isn’t only interested in helping in his father’s business, he also wants to branch out and freelance for others with social media and digital advertising. To do this, Milligan started his own media company, Milligan Media Group. “I always go into every meeting saying I’m new, but working with other business has helped me hone my skills.”

With two years left in high school, Milligan is looking forward to continuing his education in business and marketing to help his father’s business. “Something that really caught my attention is the lack of tradesmen going into this new generation. People today think success is going to college and work for a large company. This isn’t always true, being an apprentice tradesmen is worth considering.”
