Summer of Dance Program Encourages Kids to Stay Active

0

School may be out for the summer, but that doesn’t mean the learning stops. To help kids stay active throughout the summer, Berks Ballet Theatre Conservatory of Dance will host three new interactive dance programs for kinds aged 2-19.

“We are very excited for Summer of Dance to begin” says Director of Berks Ballet Theatre Conservatory of Dance, Nathan Bland “First up on the schedule is our raved about Princess Ballerina and Prince Camp.”

Bland says the week long morning camp is filled with dance, music, story time and crafts. Princess Ballerina and Prince Camp is designed for 2-4 year old’s and will allow them to explore their natural love of movement and music.

“It won’t just be about fun, it will also be a nurturing learning environment that will incorporate educational tools as well.” says Bland. For those who cannot make the June session, Berks Ballet Conservatory is also offering a second session in August.

“We are excited to have alumni and sisters Lauren and Olivia Moyer return to run both the June and August Princess Ballerina and Prince Camp this Summer” Bland said. “The great thing is, at the end of the week, they get to show off what they’ve learned to their parents”.

Lauren Moyer is a 2016 alum of Berks Ballet Theatre Conservatory of Dance and Company and a graduate of Exeter Senior High School. Lauren is a current junior in the honors college at Duquesne University. Olivia Moyer is a Berks Ballet Theatre Conservatory of Dance and Company alumni of 2018. After graduating from Exeter High School, Olivia is continuing her education at Villanova University.

For 3-9 year old’s, Berks Ballet Conservatory is offering Young Dancer summer sessions. The three 2-week sessions, in June, July , and August, are designed to help dancers learn new techniques.

“We do limit the size of the classes, that’s one thing we are known for. 12-15 is our max, which allows us to have more one-on-one time with the dancers.” says Bland “It’s a great way to get new students into dance, and showcase what we can offer to the community”.

For the more experienced dancers Berks Ballet Conservatory will also offer a summer Professional Dance program for ages 9-19. Bland says the professional Dance Experience sessions are week long, full day classes. “It’s a program designed to help dancers push and train for the next level”. With guest teachers coming in from as far away as Texas, the week summarizes with a showcase performance for family and friends.

The Princess Ballerina and Prince Camp will be held June 17-21st, and August 12-16th. Young Dancers Summer Sessions begin June 17, 19, 24,26, July 8, 10, 15, 17th, and August 5, 7, 12, 14th. The Professional Dance Experience program will be held July 22 and August 16th.

Sly Fox Opens New Taphouse at the Knitting Mills

Out with the old, in with the new. Sly Fox Brewing Company is ready to open up their first Taphouse Berks County. With a grand opening date set for Fathers Day, June 16th, the Taphouse opened their doors early for a special VIP night on Wednesday. To get the inside scoop, General Manager Randy McKinley gave us a quick tour.

“This has been a project two years in the making. When John Gianopolous brought me on board it was real exciting to learn about our expansion” said Mcinley. With a presence already in Berks County at festivals, professional sports, and more, Sly Fox has had an interest in being more community focused.

“We really feel we started something special here, so we wanted this to be our first one” said McKinley referring to the Sly Fox Taphouse concept. “We did a lot of research checking properties, then this suddenly became available, and we though this was perfect.”

Outside on the deck features two large fire pits and plenty of seating. Heading inside, McKinley says during construction the crew found a hundred and ten year old bricks on the wall. “During demolition one of the jackhammer’s slipped and popped off some plaster. After we saw the brick we’re like we got to be able to keep it. We’re able to work with the developer and our general contractor and keep some of the history inside”.

The 5,000 square foot main room features high top seating, multiple TV’s including one 161 in projection TV, and a large U shaped bar.

“Sly Fox historically is known for pizzas and wings” says McKinley. “Knowing our lunchtime crowd we kind of had to open the menu up a little bit” Showcasing their new pizza oven, McKinley says it can crank out pizzas in about 90 seconds.

What can you expect from the new Sly Fox Taphouse? A family-friendly, casual, beer-hall atmosphere. Hours are M-T 11:30-10pm, W-TH 11:30-11pm, F-S 11:30-12am, Sun 11:30-8pm. For the animal lovers, well behaved dogs on leashes are welcome on the outdoor deck. In addition, Sly Fox offers a gluten free and vegetarian menu options, although they do not brew gluten free beer.

Local Feature Film ‘Dust Nuggets’ In Need of Extras

Dust Nuggets is a film about a band called the Dust Nuggets. They went from the garage to the stadium. The band manager acquired a nasty drug habit and is currently in a coma, retelling the story. She’s not quite accurate in her account and reality keeps rearing its ugly head. Will she ever wake up?

It’s all about KK, (to be played by Linnea Sage) a wound-up band manager who’s currently lying in a coma and trying to decide if she should wake up and live or just stay dead. She’s reliving the events that led to a nasty drug overdose and subsequent deep sleep.

The thing is, she’s not being honest about it. Bits of reality commingle with a narrative that she’d like to believe but is mostly untrue. She’d like to stay pure and innocent, but out in real life she’s too far gone for that. Every story has two sides and KK is telling herself both.

Dust Nuggets is a local film with Hollywood ties. In April, the production team announced Robert Picardo and Eric Roberts will be joining the cast. Picardo is best known as the doctor in Star Trek Voyager and as Coach Cutlip in The Wonder Years. Roberts is best known for his roles in such films as Dark NightInherent Vice, and Pope of Greenwich Village, and the television series Less Than PerfectSuits, and Heroes. He was nominated for Golden Globes for the films King of the Gypsies and Bob Fosse’s Star 80. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Runaway Train.

A Schott Productions film, Dust Nuggets is the first feature production by filmmakers Sue Lange and Andrew Pochan. After a pilot was shot, Lange and Pochan realized they had a complicated story that needed a feature length film to tell it. Upon receiving a grant from the Berks County Community Foundation’s Rural Arts Grant Program, they began pre-production.

Extras Needed

Dust Nuggets is currently accepting applications to participate in the film as a background extra. Extras are needed: June 10, 13, 17, 18, and 24. For additional details contact the production team: neighborjenr@gmail.com

We simply cannot thank her enough for the time, wisdom and expertise she has given to the staff, board and most importantly, the children we serve.”

A committee comprised of board members and community partners conducted an extensive search of potential candidates from Berks County over the past five months. Rachel Kuhn, search committee chairperson, noted, “Our search process was highly competitive and revealed the high caliber of non-profit professionals in our community. Mr. Winters was unanimously appointed by our board to this position, and we look forward to the energy, expertise and enthusiasm he will bring to our organization.”

Winters said, “I am excited to begin working for the future of the Olivet organization and collaborating with our team to inspire hope and ignite a bright future for the children of Olivet and the Greater Reading community.”

Winters begins his tenure on the heels of the inaugural Leaders and Legends dinner to benefit Olivet Boys and Girls Club held on May 16, 2019. The event featured former Eagles tight end Brent Celek and alumni speaker, Rick Perez.

Paul Rosa was honored as the 2019 Champion of Youth, and Penske was recognized as the Partner for Great Futures. The event raised over $450,000 to support youth programs at Olivet, most specifically summer camp and summer learning activities.

Laurie Waxler, Development Director, shared, “We are thrilled with the outcome of the very first Leaders and Legends dinner. Thanks to the generous and committed donors in Berks County, we are able to continue to offer high quality programming to at-risk youth in our community who need us most.”

A new documentary featuring local Halloween enthusiast Branden Moyer will soon premiere on the big screen in Reading. The documentary follows the Kenhorst resident on his quest to build a professional haunted attraction in the middle of the Kenhost Shopping Plaza. Moyer, known for his backyard haunted house, Cornstalkers, went back to the drawing board in 2018 to develop a new haunted attraction, which he titled: Moonlight Massacre.

With thousands of guests visiting his backyard, Moyer teamed up with Retro Fitness of Kenhorst to take his hobby to a new level.
