Late Night Laughs at the Reading Comedy Outlet

Jesse Blanco has always had a special place in his heart for comedy. Blanco remembers watching comedy on TV as a kid, “It was always an amazing thing watching what they did, and how they got people to laugh”. Growing up he was enamored with the comedy greats, Eddie Murphy, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, and so many others.

Blanco wasn’t the class clown. In fact, he identifies himself more as a observationalist. Noticing odd or quirky things, Blanco draws his comedy out of everyday situations. Blanco’s love of comedy really blossomed during his last year at Reading High, when he met a girl who loved to laugh just as much as he did.

Originally from New York City, she takes Blanco up to the big apple on weekends. “Her neighbor was Larry David, every time we would go to New York we would always get comp tickets to these comedy shows. I thought it was the coolest thing” said Blanco.

Although he is no longer with his high school sweetheart, Blanco moves on attending Kuztown University, and starts to become involved in the local comedy scene here in Reading. “I would go to Reading Comedy Outlet shows when they were held at the Sheraton Hotel, I went to every show I could.”

Fast forward to the present day, Blanco has been married for 18 years, and enjoys his life with his wife Deneise, kids, and grandchildren. “I met my wife 18 years ago and we would go to shows together all the time. But it wasn’t until 3 years ago when we were having dinner that she asked me an interesting question. She said Jesse, if money wasn’t an object what would you do for the rest of your life? And I told her, I want to be a stand up comedian. She looked me dead in the eye and said, …but your not even funny.”

Being supportive, Denise approves of his crazy idea and Blanco enrolls in the Philadelphia Comedy Academy. “At my graduation they had everyone perform a ‘tight five’. I told a few jokes and no one laughed… The instructor stopped me and said, your funny lets work with that. After helping me with a few jokes he pushed me back on stage. I Told a few new jokes, and for the first time people were laughing. It was a rush of energy.”

Today, Besides working as a carpenter for the City of Reading. Blanco manages the Reading Comedy Outlet based out of Hiester Lanes with his wife. The opportunity presented itself when the former manager moved to New York to pursue his comedy career. “Before he left he introduced me to Earl David Reed. He’s mentored me and helped me to grow my comedy and the outlet.”

Blanco not only hosts comedy shows out of Hiester Lanes, he also hosts Open Mic nights on Thursdays to help give aspiring comedians the chance to perform in front of a crowd. The laughs, expression, and response from fans has helps Blanco hone his craft. “Here it is three years later. I’ve worked with people like Rob Schneider, comedians who have been on Kevin Hart’s ‘Hart of the City’ episodes, and its been an amazing ride.”

Looking towards the future Blanco wants his comedy to reach more people, make them laugh. Although he books acts at the Comedy Outlet, he wants people to think of himself as a comedian first. “I perform every show, whether it’s 5 people or 5000 the same, you give it your all, put it out there, and see where it goes.”

Ready to laugh! Reading Comedy Outlet hosts their Open Mic Night at Alley Oops every Thursday night. Open to anyone 21+ w/ valid I.D. Sign ups start at 7:45, show starts at 8pm. Come out and show everyone your funny side or come out and support your local comics.

Charity Softball Tournament Benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association

I was once told when I was a teenager that the friends you make in college are most likely to be your lifelong friends. A few others also told me that friends come and go in this world. That may be true for most but don’t tell that to the JRF Panthers Softball Team based out of Reading, PA, which consists of mostly 2009 Exeter High school graduates.

A group that has been friends going all the way back to junior high school. Some people may say the long bond between the friends is due to technology and the rise of social media making it easier for them to stay connected to others. I beg to differ. This group of friends is different. They have a strong loyalty not only to each other but to the community they grew up in.

In 2009, during the group of friends’ senior year of high school, they formed a slow-pitch-softball team together. This allowed them to still hang out and participate in sports after high school. Their friend Johnny Favinger sponsored the team. Johnny was a stock car driver and drove a black and pink car with a Pink Panther logo. The softball team took after the same color scheme and logo.

The first season the group of friends didn’t win a single game, going 0-32 on the season. Despite the team’s struggles, the team stuck together and ten years later what started as just a simple community softball team has become something much more.

This past March, the team formed a limited liability company called JRF Squad LLC. The company sells clothing and merchandise using the black and pink color scheme. Many people became fond of the team’s uniforms through the years and the group of friends turned it into their own brand. Five percent of all the brand’s proceeds go to Bright Pink. A non-profit organization, which is focused on prevention and early detection of breast cancer in women.

Giving back to non-profit is nothing new for the JRF Panthers Softball Team. Two years ago the team held a charity softball tournament for Four Diamonds, last year for the Standing Up to POTS Organization and this season will be hosting a tournament with all proceeds going to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Unlike the past two seasons, this tournament will take place in Reading, PA at Lorane Hollow Park in Exeter Township. The “Come Out and Play for MDA tournament will take place on Saturday, July 28th and consist of raffles, prizes, shirts, music, games, food, drinks, a dunk tank, and much more! It will run from 8am-6pm and is free to the general public.

David Nazario: Make Love Your Religion

This past Saturday, I was able to check off another goal on my list: have a live show. In the podcasting world, a live show is similar to a concert. You bring the conversation off the recording and into real time. Having attended a live show to my favorite podcast back in February, I was so excited to have one of my own.

I told my dear friend and mentor, David, and immediately propositioned him to be my guest. I was thrilled when he obliged, even though he thinks my audience may grow tired of him (impossible!) I was able to partner with Reading Magazine to have a video portion to be able to share on social media. I was introduced to Jarrod who graciously assisted us with sound. I was able to have amazing merchandise thanks to Custom It AFS.

Without even asking, Mateo of Retorocle came and took the amazing pictures. And of course, all our amazing friends, family, and even new faces came to watch! Little by little, all the pieces fell into place. So many people came together to bring my dream to life, it was truly a labor of love. I’m so happy to now be able to share the audio with you all.

Meet David Nazario

In Make Love Your Religion: How To Put Love First & Succeed at Doing What You Love, you will get an exclusive look at the steps author David Nazario takes to ensure that he only does what he loves, yet calls it “work.” At age 34, David has never had a full-time job. He earns an income writing, speaking and working with young people – all activities that he loves to do. Make Love Your Religion explores David’s journey as an Afro-Puerto Rican writer, traveler, and young professional from a poverty stricken city in southeastern Pennsylvania.

This multi-genre text combines self-help, workbook, and memoir elements to create a narrative that encourages readers to consider doing what they love for a living a spiritual act. David’s goal in writing this is to dispel, for people of all ages, the concept that we are trapped by our circumstances and to plant the seeds that success is within reach for all of us when we put love at the forefront of all of our endeavors.

Speed Networking Connects Local Business Professionals

It’s been one year since Limarys Rodriguez, owner of LMG Marketing Solutions began connecting local business professionals. Besides managing her business, Limarys is the founder of Berks County Speed Networking, an event series hosted throughout the county.

To host the one-year anniversary, Limarys chose Piazza Honda/ Acura of Reading. Over 50 business professionals sat among classic cars to meet like-minded business professionals. Over the last year roughly 400 people have attended her networking events, bringing Berks County professionals closer together.

If you are not familiar, the goal of a speed networking event is to provide a platform where business minded professionals can get together in a fast paced, effective, and fun environment. Speed networking is what it sounds like, quick, focused opportunities to meet those who can catapult your career or business.

Limarys Rodriguez (left) joins the speed networking rotation.

Limarys tells us she came up with the idea from attending other local networking events. “I wanted to be able to go a networking event and meet everyone in the room. That was my goal walking in, but it wouldn’t always happen, for a whole bunch of reasons…”.

Going to a networking event can be tricky for a ‘first timer’. People are usually paired in groups, some leave early, the list goes on.. Limarys wanted to solve this problem for herself and clients. Speed networking was the solution, a place where everyone was on an equal playing field.

The concept is simple, people sit across from each other in a row. After 1 minute a bell rings and everyone moves to the right. Now you’re in front of a new person and the process starts again. Although it’s a fast paces environment, it’s just enough time to meet someone new and make a connection. Exchanging business cards are common practice to contact a person later.

“I love hearing the success stories from people who have made connections, it’s makes all of the hard work planning the event worth it” said Limarys.
